El Salvador
Scouting in El Salvador responded to the gang culture which had developed in their country by organising camps for gang members to offer these young people another way to live their lives. By using the Scout Method and providing positive role models in older Scouts, the young people were encouraged to form 'Solidarity Brigades' and build on the positive values experienced in Scouting.

Hong Kong
In Hong Kong, young people aged 14-20 who commit crime can be sent to detention centres. The key purpose of these centres is to rehabilitate these young people and help them to develop skills so that they turn away from a life of crime. Scouting is recognised in Hong Kong as an organization that offers positive character development. Scout Groups have been present in two of the Detention Centres for many years and there are very positive results as none of the Scouts have re-offended.

Ireland
Ireland has been a very divided community for many years, which led to around 30 years of conflict, mostly in the north of the island, from the late 1960s to 2000. Young people have grown up in divided communities and this formed very negative stereotypes in the minds of young people on both sides of the border and in the different religious communities. Scouting has been active throughout the conflict in breaking down these barriers and there is now a cross-community project to help young people learn more about their own culture and other people's culture so that they can begin to live together in harmony.

Saudi Arabia
After the events in the USA on September 11 2001, Saudi Arabia recognized that there is a very negative image of their country in many parts of the world. The King of Saudi Arabia recognized the important role that Scouting world-wide can play in helping to develop a culture of peace and called on all Scouting to become 'messengers of peace'. To support this an intercultural event for Scouts from all around the world was held in Saudi Arabia in 2006.

Slovakia
Slovakia is a small country with a population of around 5 million people, of which around half a million are Roma, or gypsies. The Roma community, which exists all over central Europe is a very marginalised community with very poor living conditions and high levels of unemployment. Scouting in Slovakia is working with the Roma community to offer Scouting to young people while meeting their particular needs and interests. This is having a very positive impact on the lives of the young people in the Roma community and is reducing prejudice against the Roma in Slovakia.

South Africa
South Africa is a very beautiful country and since 1994 it has been working to overcome the effects of apartheid. AIDS is also a very large problem for the county and as many as 22% of the teachers in the county are affected. Scouting is responding to this by helping young people to say 'No' to things that give them a 'no' feeling. This programme uses peer education which is important as many young people do not want to discuss the issues of sex and sexually transmitted diseases with adults. Scouting is also working to support the rural girl child, as these young people are particularly vulnerable in Scout Africa.
