Peace is not the product of a victory or a command. It has no finishing line, no final deadline, no fixed definition of achievement. Peace is a never-ending process, the work of many decisions.

Let's Rebuild Aceh
Scouts in Indonesia are rebuilding Aceh following the December 2003 Tsunami which caused tremendous damage and casualties. Their "Let's rebuild Aceh" project is a response to the economical and ecological problems resulting after the Tsunami, and also aims to improve the living conditions of the people of the region, especially the children. DescriptionThe Indonesian Scouts first launched a programme bringing together 1,500 Scouts from all over the country for a month long Community Development Camp to help rebuild the infrastructure of Aceh and help its inhabitants. The vegetation was badly hit by the Tsunami, which is why one of the first activities of the camp was to replant the Mangrove, as it plays a very important role in protecting the coastline, and because it is the refuge for many fish which are necessary to the local population. After some training, and despite the difficulty of the task, the volunteers were able to plant 15,000 trees. But these were not the only plants affected by the tidal wave, and all trees except for the coconut trees were swept away. The Scouts, after some training, therefore planted about 2,000 trees to absorbe some of the pollution and enhance the quality of life of inhabitants. It was not only nature that suffered from the disaster, the local economy was also in a very bad state, in particular the fishing industry. The Scouts decided to rehabilitate two fishponds belonging to the public school of fishery and also reconstructed the only fish auction facility of the sub-district, giving fishermen a place to sell their fish. Life after the disaster was made very difficult by the lack of clean water, due to the pollution of the wells by sea water. The Scouts therefore installed three deep wells and trained the local population in clean water management. Children were very hardly hit by the Tsunami and two specific projects were developed to help them get back to normal life. The first was the construction of 9 playgrounds, so that the children, most of whom had lost family members, could play and interact again. The other project, aimed at children and adults alike, was the creation of 9 libraries, and collection of/fundraising for the necessary books. New staff were trained for the library as many had been killed or displaced following the Tsunami. All of these projects have made a huge difference to the lives of the inhabitants, nonetheless, the Scouts also recognised that the victims had to be given something to look forward to, which is why they decided to help them to develop useful skills. Different activities have been offered to different age groups, tailored to their specific needs. Children have been given drama lessons and have created and performed plays. This has helped them to come to terms with the disaster and their losses.Adolescents have been taught how to print t-shirts, giving them a possibility for artistic self-expression and also a useful skill to bring in some money. Adults, mainly women, have been taught how to bake and manage a bakery, again providing them with the means to earn a living and support their families. |
