Scouts in ten regions of Ghana are working with young people to clean up their communities and encourage people not to drop their rubbish on the streets.
Scouts in Barbados are being trained to respond to the key issues facing young people on the island today. These issues are: HIV/AIDS, drug abuse and disaster awareness. The Scouts are learning about these issues in order to support others, live healthier lives and be better prepared for the hurricanes which hit the island annually.
Scouts in Oman are helping to educate their communities through a peer education project which aims to increase awareness in young people of specific health issues in society. In this way, young people will be able to help to protect themselves and their friends and relatives from harm.
4 million South Africans, and 25 million people in Africa, are infected with HIV/AIDS. Over 50% of new infections with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, now occur in young people. Scouts in South Africa believe that together, Scouts around the world can change the course of this disease and they are leading the way with a peer education programme.
Scouts in Zimbabwe are working to spread awareness of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, and the link from these to HIV/AIDS, which is a huge problem in their country.
Scouts in Rwanda are reaching out to young people living in harsh conditions. The project aims to integrate young people into scout activities who, because of their health, their living conditions or their past, experience insecurity and marginalisation. It also aims to help to make the community aware of the need to integrate and take care of people identified as living in difficult conditions.
Scouts in the United States are giving their time and energy to provide food and shelter for those in need and to teach their peers about healthy living. Service is a core value of Scouting and the Boy Scouts of America have been helping their communities since their creation. They decided to focus on food and shelter issues because 17.8% of children in the United States live in poverty, and because their living conditions affect their performance in school.
Scouts in Brazil are launching the “Let's disarm our children!” project. They are educating young people to stay away from firearms of any kind, even toy guns. They are learning to understand how destructive the use of firearms is and how to resolve disputes through dialogue and compromise.
Scouts in Lebanon are coordinating the 'Rebirth of the Phoenix' project, bringing together Rover Scouts and leaders from around the world to assist in the rebuilding of Southern Lebanon after the conflict, distributing relief to displaced citizens, developing environmental and health campaigns, and educational programs for families and children.
The Scouts in Mozambique are fighting leprosy and supporting the initiative to eradicate it entirely in their country. In order to achieve this goal, they have developed awareness campaigns, they are training specialised patrols and are helping the people affected.
Kuwait Scouts are implementing a series of solidarity programmes to support their communities and people in need outside Kuwait. They will support community development, health awareness, the collection of spectacles for those in need, donation campaigns, collection of school materials, supporting the Hajj (pilgrimage) and promoting cultural exchanges at Kuwaiti national Scout events.
Scouts in Madagascar are raising awareness of health and environmental problems and taking action to make a difference. Their “Civic Involvement of Scouts for Peace in Madagascar” project includes fundraising to buy medical drugs, repairing hospital toilets, HIV/AIDS. awareness, planting trees and making people aware of environmental problems.
Scouts in Malawi are working to improve the health and living conditions of young people living on the streets. Young people will be helped to develop life-skills to build their self-confidence and self-esteem. Thirty young people will be trained initially and then though a peer education and support system the project will reach out to other young people.
Scouts in New Zealand are promoting health education for a range of serious issues facing young people today. They are raising awareness of skin cancer and educating young people to combat obesity, psychological abuse, physical abuse, substance abuse and the growing problem of youth suicide.
Scouts in Spain are fighting social violence by creating video games which promote tolerance and care. They are focusing on four main issues: gender violence, domestic violence against women, peer violence (bullying, teasing), and homophobic violence. 14000 copies of these games will be distributed throughout the country by the member associations of the federation.
Scouts in Senegal, in collaboration with the Daaras (koranic schools) teachers, are working to improve the living conditions of the young talibés (students) who often have to beg and live in the streets.
Scouts in Namibia are responding to the issue of domestic violence by training leaders and running projects for Scouts. The aim is to help all Scouts understand domestic violence and have at least one practical method of dealing with violence in their own lives.
Scouts in Tanzania and neighbouring countries are raising awareness of key issues such as drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, sustainable environmental development and peace education. They organised a peace caravan from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Nyeri in Kenya and as they traveled they ran activities for young people in the local communities on these key global issues.
Since the beginning of the Darfur crisis in July 2003, local Scouts in Darfur communities have been working to support people living in Internally Displaced People's camps, improving their living conditions, working to boost their moral and supporting peace building initiatives in the region.
Scouts in Bolivia are fighting child mortality by informing people and distributing Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT). This massive ongoing campaign is aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goal of cutting child mortality by two by 2015. Each Scout plays a role by taking responsibility for one block of houses and distributing ORT to every child under the age of 5.
Scouts in the Gulu District of Uganda are raising awareness of HIV/AIDS through peer education, specifically in camps for internally displaced people in their district. They train young leaders as peer educators, who then go into the local scout units to tell their peers about HIV/AIDS.
Scouts in Pakistan are helping the communities affected by the massive earthquake which took place on 8 October 2005. The activities of the Scouts in the affected areas included an awareness campaign on health education and the need for vaccination, the organisation of community meetings, the distribution of health and sanitising materials and the provision of radio sets.
Scouts in Angola are working in partnership with UNICEF to combat the cholera epidemic in Luanda and the four most affected provinces of Angola: Benguela, Cabinda, Malange, and Huambo.
