Description

Scouts in the Seychelles are promoting peace through community education and activities for children, and developing projects for young people to learn about peace and the promotion of human rights. The Scouts are also developing a special gift for their country - a peace garden - which will serve as a reminder to the Seychelles people of the need for continued effort to bring about peace.

The Seychelles has not had a history scarred by wars and conflicts but it did experience slavery which has left its impact on the country and its now multi-racial population. The country may be small, but its size has not spared it from problems facing society, especially those facing young people such as bullying, petty crime, violence in the home, substance abuse and delinquency. Scouts in the Seychelles are taking the opportunity of the Gifts for Peace project to make sure that their community does not take peace for granted, but that it is something that they all value and work to maintain.

The Scouts collected various statistics to evaluate the problem areas. They then designed their project to address these problems, making them the focus point of many of their special activities. These activities address peace issues, the problems of today’s society as well as finding a means of bringing the people of a nation together.

The Scouts identified the following objectives for their Gifts for Peace project:

- To raise public awareness of the problems in society that have an impact on peace.
- To engage people in taking small local actions to promote peace in their community.
- To educate the general public about the various issues (disputes and their origins, conflicts, wars, historical issues) affecting peace.
- To provide the public with concrete ways and means to promote peace.
- To raise public awareness on Human Rights (respect and responsibility towards them).
- To create a solid foundation to allow for networking amongst the local youth groups and organisations.
- To build a Peace Park, which will in one way or another cater for the above aims.

The Scouts have elaborated a plan of action for each of these aims and are implementing these actions in the Seychelles between 2004 and 2007.

The peace park will be a gift to the Seychellois people and a culmination of the activities leading up to 2007- the Centenary of Scouting. The park reflects the Scouts' work to care for and protect the environment. It is also a project that goes hand in hand with the love and interest of the Seychellois in nature and its conservation. Last but not least in the long line of justifications for such a gift, is to provide a space amidst the bustle and hustle of the city where people can meet: a park in which each person can have his own special place. The aim is to bring people together, by providing a conducive atmosphere for peaceful interaction and the cultivation of inner as well as external harmony.

This project has received the support of the President of the Seychelles, Mr. James Michel, who is also the Patron of the Scout Association.
