Gifts for Peace – Learning from Projects

In 2006, twelve Scout leaders from six National Scout Organizations came together to share the achievements of long-standing peace projects in their communities.

These webpages set out key learning from these projects, which could be useful to others who are beginning or developing their own Gifts for Peace projects during 2007 and beyond.

1. Introduction

Gifts for Peace is the centennial project for Scouting worldwide. Many National Scout Organizations have been working on projects related to peace for many years, and to date more than 120 Gifts for Peace projects have been developed. These projects respond to real needs in local communities and they have changed the lives of individuals and have changed communities.

Last year, twelve Scout leaders from six National Scout Organizations came together to share the achievements of long-standing peace projects in their communities. The learning was rich and varied for everyone involved. The projects are responding to complicated issues that have been in place for many years – and there are results. Scouting is making an impact in the lives of young people, often in very difficult conditions in many different and diverse communities around the world.

It is hoped that this small resource is an inspiration for more Scouts to be involved in 'peace' projects in their communities and that people who are involved in projects will stop and reflect occasionally, so that they can discover what they have learned and share their learning with others.

2. Country Projects

The countries represented at the event were: El Salvador, Hong Kong, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia and South Africa.
