Scouting for all = Community on Duty

União dos Escoteiros do Brasil

Brazil

Scouts in Brazil's Piraquara city are reaching out to children from really underpriviledged backgrounds and giving them opportunities to join in Scout activities or join Scouting. Their Scout Group is called 'Guardio das Aguas', and they work to preserve the local rivers and the environment.

Description

Guardio das Aguas is the biggest Scout Group in Brazil, with 585 young Scouts. Many of its members come from areas with serious economical and social problems: poverty, drug trafficking and urban violence. By geting involved with the Scouts, and their environmental projects, the young people can get off the streets, giving them the opportunity to do something special and to learn new skills, thus boosting their self-esteem and encouraging them to contribute to the life of their community.

With the help of the local BS Colway company, they are running a scout centre where they can learn about environmental preservation, and in particular the rational use of fresh water and the preservation of their local rivers, which are dammed in the Itaipu Lake, through the Iguacu river.

The group aims to reach out to more young people and increase their numbers to 1,000! They are also working to ensure that the centre complies with international standards, so that they can host Scout visitors and exchange with other young people in the future.

In addition to their environmental activites, this group teaches the young people something special: how to ride a horse. In fact, they have a mounted Scout unit (Unidade Escoteiro Montada).
