Let's save our indigenous trees

Ethiopia Scout Association

Ethiopia

Scouts in Ethiopia are planting and taking care of 50,000 indigenous trees, and also teaching people in their communities about the importance of trees and sustainable development.

Description

Ethiopia is one of the most environmentally affected countries in the world. Most indigenous and endemic trees have been destroyed for varying reasons and the result has been the desertification of the country which has led to current drought problems. The Ethiopean Scouts Association has mobilised its 80,000 plus members to contribute to the reforestation of Ethiopia by planting and taking care of 50,000 indigenous trees all over the country.

The project started in July 2004 and planting will continue until September 2007. The weeding, protecting, and caring for the trees will continue beyond this date.
As well as planting and taking care of the trees Scouts will be involved in programmes of education within their communities about the importance of trees, the sustainable use of
trees for fuel wood, and the fight against drought.

It is hoped that these actions will result in a better, greener, Ethiopia.
