Scouts and Guides as Peacemakers

Swiss Guide and Scout Movement

Switzerland

Scouts and Guides of all ages are active as peacemakers in their own communities. Each Scout district is helping its members to identify local needs and develop the skills to respond to these needs. In June 2007, all of the activities will be reported on and shared, and the peace-makers will be awarded with the Peace-maker badge.

Description

Swiss Scouts recognise that peace-making starts with individuals and every young person needs to develop the skills necessary to be active as peacemakers in their daily lives. The situation of children living in Switzerland is often very different, for example, some children live in small communities high in the mountains, some live in inner cities, some live in communities with little or no ethnic diversity and others live in very ethnically diverse communities - and they can all help to make a difference.

This Gifts for Peace project is helping Scouts and Guides and their leaders respond to local situations and work on various themes, specifically:

• Bullying – in and out of schools

• Conflict resolution – between families and friends

• Children's Rights

• Assertiveness

• Fair-Play – in sports and in Scouting

• Integration – living together in harmony in a multi-cultural society

• Social freedom – class differences

• Environmental awareness, as a prerequisite of freedom

• Working with other NGOs

• An understanding of violence against children

Through participating in these projects, Scouts and Guides are being encouraged to be more socially responsible and realise that they can take action to make an impact on their family, school, Scout Group or local community.

A key part of the project is sharing the results in 2007. Scouts and Guides in Districts will come together to share information and be awarded with their Peace-makers badges.
