7. Develop and share expertise

It is important that good practice in Scouting is shared so that other people at locally, nationally and internationally can learn from the experience of others. All the projects represented here have been active in sharing their learning with a wider audience and the participants have found sharing their experiences and learning with and from each other richly rewarding.

Example 1: Slovakia

The Roma community is a community that extends over much of central Europe and in all countries Roma people are marginalised. Scouting in Slovakia has been very active in sharing its programme and results both in Slovakia and within Scouting around the world. The programme has received television coverage and has been highlighted at many Scout events in the European Region and at the World Scout Conference.

This profile and sharing of expertise has resulted in increased confidence in the programme and increased funding opportunities.

Example 2: Hong Kong

Scouting in Hong Kong now has over 20 years experience of working with young offenders. The profile of Scouting within the community and its expertise in working with young offenders in Hong Kong is well recognised. There has been a strong partnership with the social services department which has helped the programme to develop.

The Scout Band which has been formed in Scout Group 122 has been an excellent method of promoting the programme and is a practical demonstration of the development of skills, self-confidence and self-esteem in the young inmates.

Example 3: South Africa

Scouting is South Africa has taken the lead in HIV/AIDS awareness in the Africa Region and especially in the southern zone of the continent. The curriculum for the HIV/AIDS awareness badge in the Africa Region was based on the work undertaken in countries with experience in this area and Scout Africa contributed a great deal to this development. It has also taken a lead in promoting the excellent work that is now happening in many countries in the zone on 1 December for AIDS Awareness Day and has produced a colour document setting out the projects in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
