Scouting for Peace
Since the beginning of the Darfur crisis in July 2003, local Scouts in Darfur communities have been working to support people living in Internally Displaced People's camps, improving their living conditions, working to boost their moral and supporting peace building initiatives in the region. DescriptionThe Scouts have erected and managed camps and supported services in the camps such as the distribution of food and relief. They have provided guidance and orientation for those arriving at the camp and have worked to promote health education, including running health campaigns for malaria control and polio vacinations. They have rebuilt schools, worked to clean mosques and religious places and planted trees in the camps. Scouts have taken an active part in the organisation of and participation in social sports activities in the camps, and have established activities to further peace education, health education and awareness of HIV/AIDS in particular. The Scouts are specifically involved in the IDP camps around Alfashir and Niyala towns. The Sudanese Scouts are working in partnership with the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), the Africa Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS), WHO, UNICEF, local and international organisations and the national authorities. |
